Dickinson Supervisors Discuss Clay County Connector Trail Route

July 12, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson County Supervisors today (Tues.) discussed the route of the so-called Clay County connector trail just south of Milford. Plans call for the trail to follow the east side of Highway 71. Original plans also called for a segment to run along 230th Street in the old town area just south of Milford. The supervisors heard from a resident of that area opposed to that, saying she didn’t know about it until a surveyor showed up on her property…

“There should have been some alternative routes considered that we as landowners, if we were included in this, we could have brought this to their attention years ago and we wouldn’t have lost, or possibly lose this funding.”

There was also concern over possible impacts of drainage in that area. Erin Reed of Dickinson County Trails instead proposed to run that segment along 225th Street through what’s known as Pioneer Park. Reed also addressed calls to move the connector trail entirely to the west side of Highway 71, something city officials in Milford have been advocating, citing safety concerns with a proposed crossing of the road at Fostoria. Reed told supervisors making such a drastic change would likely jeopardize federal funding that’s been received…

“To try and change the scope of the project and go on the west side of ’71 would be, probably would mean losing about $360,000 in funding we already have, and it’s also a trail to something that doesn’t exist yet. Where we’re at now we’re tying into a trail that exists, so.”

The supervisors ultimately adopted a resolution that will keep the trail on the east side of the highway, with the change from 230th Street to 225th Street just south of Milford.
