Dickinson Supervisors Approve Four Way Stop Proposal

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)—Some big changes are in store for what law enforcement officials say is one of the most dangerous intersections in Dickinson county. The board of supervisors voted three-to-two today (Tues.) to make the intersection of 175th Street, Sunner Avenue and Stakeout Road, a four-way stop. North-south traffic through the intersection is already required to stop. Today’s (Tues.) action by the board of supervisors will also require east/west traffic on 175th Street to stop at that intersection as well. The county and the cities of Spirit Lake and Okoboji all have jurisdiction in that area. Spirit Lake Police Chief Jeff Hanson told the supervisors past history of that intersection between 2002 and 2011 points out the need for something to be done now…(click here for comment.)

“We had one fatality, one major injury, 11 minor injury, three possible and seven property damage.”

The supervisors took no action on a similar request last fall. They instead requested an increased patrol of the intersection.

County Engineer Dan Eckert says it could be atleast a week or two before the new signs are in place. The new stop signs for east and westbound traffic will be illuminated with LED’s.
