Dickinson Supervisors Again Discuss Secondary Roads Properties In Spirit Lake

April 19, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– There was more discussion at today’s (Tues.) Dickinson County Board of Supervisors meeting regarding the future of what is now the current secondary roads facility properties in Spirit Lake. The Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District presented a formal offer to purchase one of the buildings for equipment storage. However, Sheriff Greg Baloun told the supervisors the same building was promised to him years ago for additional storage. Supervisor Kim Wermersen said he feels it should go to the sheriff based on that…

“I’m afraid that if we would make this deal, now we’re helter skeltering where we’re going to go with this stuff for a minimum of two years, and I don’t think that’s the right thing to do.”

Fellow supervisor Tim Fairchild suggested some other buildings at the site be torn down and a new one constructed for the sheriff’s storage…

“Can you really argue that in 50 years it wouldn’t be better to have a nice facility here that you may not use all of, you may use part of, or be debating on what to do with to repair that yellow building, what state would it be in in 50 years?”

Fairchild also suggested some land owned by the sanitary district near the new county shop in Milford be thrown into the mix. He says the value of the gravel at that site could help offset the cost of new construction. But supervisor Chairman Bill Leupold says he’s hearing concern from those who feel the county is spending too much…

“As far as building new, we’ve been building. When I went out to get my signatures to run, I got chewed about the new shop building. I think people are starting to look at us, you’re spending too much money.”

The supervisors expressed no interest in the offer from the Sanitary District, suggesting they look at other buildings at the current secondary roads facilities in Spirit Lake and see if they might be interested in making a new proposal.
