Dickinson County Water Quality Commission Gives Update

July 14, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Arnolds Park)– Member entities of the Dickinson County Water Quality Commission may be requested to increase their contributions to the organization. Coordinator John Wills told the Arnolds Park City Council Wednesday this would be the first time since the commission was founded in 2001 that they’ve sought an increase. He says inflation since then has diminished what they’re able to do…

“We’ve been very frugal, we’ve been very good with the money that we’ve got provided, but over the course of the years, 20 years, that money is worth less and we’re able to get less done with it.”

The Dickinson County Water Quality Commission currently awards some $200,000 a year in grants for projects…

“We have $200,000 a year which tallies out to about $4 million that we will have spent of your money, all of the county money. We have matched that with $30 million. So we have brought in and done a very good job of matching your dollars with other dollars: federal, state and local and private dollars.”

Wills says the commission requested he get input from cities and the county on a possible increase, which the commission will consider further at upcoming meetings. He says any change will require a new 28E agreement with the member entities.
