Dickinson County Trails Board Looking Into Enhanced 911 System

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Officials with the Dickinson County Trails Board say they’re looking into the possibility of establishing an E911 system on the trails that’s similar to what’s been established in the county.

Yvonne Taylor, who represents the city of Spirit Lake on the board, told the city council Tuesday their goal is to improve safety along the trails, and that having such a system would go a long way toward doing that.

An E911 system would pinpoint the location of a trail user who dials 911.

Taylor says there are safety issues that do come up on the trails, and that pinpointing the location of someone, especially someone not familiar with the area, can be very difficult.

The trails are routinely patrolled in the summer months by volunteers with a group known as “Seniors And Lawmen Together”, or SALT, but officials say they can’t be everywhere at once.

Taylor told the city council designing and implementing an E911 system for the trails is one of the Trail Board’s longer-range goals.
