(Spirit Lake)– While maps depicting new congressional and state legislative districts are in the works, that also will hold true for maps depicting new local supervisor districts and voting precincts on the county level.
County Auditor Nancy Reiman briefed the Dickinson county board of supervisors on the process at their meeting Tuesday.
The first step is for the supervisors to appoint a county re-districting committee. Seven people served on a re-districting committee the last time maps were re-drawn following the census several years ago.
The committee’s charge will be to come up with supervisor districts that have nearly equal population. They can only deviate by one percent.
Reiman added the county really can’t start its re-districting process until the state has finalized its re-districting map, as the local one will hinge on that to a certain degree.
The new maps become effective January 1st, 2012.
Appointment of the local re-districting committee will be on the agenda for this coming Tuesday’s supervisor’s meeting.
