Dickinson County Supervisors Impose Weight Restrictions On Bridge

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Weight restrictions are being imposed on a Dickinson county bridge that has deterioriating wooden pilings.

The Dickinson county board of supervisors voted Tuesday to implement the restrictions on the bridge on County Road M-27 two miles south of the intersection with County Road A-34.

The bridge is heavily traveled, with the route used by many truckers as a detour to get around Highway 71 construction. Eckert says truckers will need to find an alternate route. He says warning signs advising them of the restriction will be placed in a number of strategic spots to provide plenty of advance warning.

The current bridge was constructed in the 1950’s and originally wasn’t scheduled for replacement until 2015. But given the current circumstances, the supervisors Tuesday bumped that up to 2013.

Eckert says a recent inspection is raising concern over the rate some wooden pilings under the northbound side of the structure are deterioriating.
