Dickinson County Supervisors Hear Request For Moratorium On Wind Turbines

July 25, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors this (Tues.) morning heard a request calling for a three year moratorium on the construction of any new wind turbines in the county. Kristine VanKleek of rural Milford is seeking the temporary ban…

“We’ve been informed that a wind developer will be submitting their application in the next month and that the application will be evaluated based on the current 2009 ordinance. The research data clearly shows that the current ordinance is not sufficient to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of the residents of Dickinson county.”

Supervisor Chairman Bill Leupold said acting on such a moratorium without first getting a recommendation from the county’s Planning and Zoning Commission and/or Board of Adjustment would be premature in his opinion…

“For us to just do it without their recommendation, I feel, would be lack of following our duty.”

Leupold added there would still be an opportunity for public input in that process…

“I would think that this will come up again either from the P & Z, from the Board of Adjustment, or during a public hearing. At that point we would have people, I believe, that would be both for and against that resolution.”

Fellow supervisors seemed to agree with Leupold, as no action was taken on the moratorium request.
