Dickinson County Supervisors Approve Pre-Application For Zoning Matter On NE Side Of Big Spirit Lake

February 28, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors Tuesday gave the go ahead for the county’s Planning and Zoning Commission to proceed in acting on a proposed subdivision on the northeast side of Big Spirit Lake, near Martha Yarnes Beach.

Planning and Zoning Administrator Megan Kardell says the land in question recently changed hands and the new owner wants to subdivide it, making it possible for improvements to be made to some existing outbuildings…

“There’s multiple little sheds that have been on this property in existence for many, many years, many of them constructed prior to zoning. There is one house that was subdivided out and so that was when the Reisders did their one legal split without going through subdivision. So there are many property owners out there that are wishing to re-build their structures that are more or less deteriorating and dilapidating and I can’t, how the zoning ordinance is wrote, I can’t authorize any structures out there.”

Kardell says only accessory buildings are allowed in that area and that no dwellings can be built there. The Planning and Zoning Commission is expected to take up the matter at their meeting in April.
