Dickinson County Supervisors Approve Budget Following Public Hearing

April 30, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors this (Tues.) morning held a public hearing on the county’s proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. For the second consecutive year it contains the maximum levy allowed for the rural and general funds. The supervisors last year went with the maximum levy to fund the purchase of a new radio system, with the provision of lowering the levy this upcoming fiscal year. But the board opted to continue with the maximum levy for the upcoming fiscal year saying the 63 percent projected carryover funds may be needed to address impacts of Iowa House File 718. Supervisor Tim Fairchild…

“I assure you nobody on this board is happy about what we’re doing. I’m right on that, aren’t I? Nobody is happy about it. We all, talk about having mud on your face. I mean this thing, this situation, I remember what I said last year. I remember exactly what I said. And I know what I’m saying now. Yeah, I’m not happy about it at all.”

Several who spoke at today’s (Tues.) hearing again called on supervisors to lower expenditures instead of continuing to max out the levy. One resident who lives in the Francis Sites area warned the supervisors some residents are literally being taxed out of their homes…

“About 15 years ago they came through and re-evaluated the lake property, it went up and I would say we had about a 30 percent turnover in Francis Sites of senior citizens that saved their whole life, bought their houses, and thought their $800 a month social security would cover them. The taxes went up, they couldn’t pay the taxes, or the food, and they ended up selling their houses. I think that we have another group of people that are close to that again.”

The supervisors voted five to nothing to adopt the budget as originally proposed.
