Dickinson County Supervisor Optimistic About Unified Zoning

December 10, 2025

(Spirit Lake)– A Dickinson County Supervisor says he’s still optimistic the cities, county and Iowa Great Lakes Sanitary District can collaborate on a comprehensive land use plan and unified zoning. Speaking at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Steve Clark said preliminary discussions so far have been positive for the most part. He says it’s in each entity’s own best interest to work together.

“And just letting things happen, I think has become a a burden to the county instead of, you know, and and the municipalities. I think the that we need to get together and, and share in this and and create a vision that that will enhance and bring not only more housing development, maybe more industrial or, you know, light industrial things like that to the area. So people have have jobs and, uh, you know, we can we can build housing and people can afford to live in the area.

As we’ve reported previously discussions over unified zoning came more into light following the 2024 floods and the confusion over different regulations between the cities and counties when it comes to shorelines and how they should be repaired.
