Dickinson County Nature Center To Hold Another Family Nature Night

March 20, 2026

Friday March 27th marks this month’s Family Nature Night at the Dickinson County Nature Center. Amy Heibult, Community Relations Coordinator at the Nature Center says it will be a fun night to learn about Pesky Pests…

“This was kind of a fun way to educate families about different insects that are beneficial, but also may be detrimental to our health. So it’s kind of a fun way, an age appropriate way to learn about how mosquitoes can spread. West Nile or other insects are actually beneficial in controlling populations.”

Heibult explains the activities…

“The evening will begin with a game called Good Bug, Bad Bug, where participants will stand next to an insect, photos of an insect and they’ll have to use a fly swatter to swat the insect if they think it’s a bad bug. So Miss Danika will be educating about those various insects during that activity. And then there’s also going to be a tag style game called Pest Problems, where kids will get popsicle sticks and the one child is the insect, and then they’ll have to tag other children. So it’s a great way to visualize how sometimes disease can spread from wildlife to other wildlife or humans in kind of a fun way.” Kids will also learn about the natural pest controllers here in Iowa. Family Nature Night is designed for families with elementary-aged children that love nature and can explore that through fun hands-on activities. Registration is required and the deadline is March 25th at 5:00 pm. You can get more info on the program and register at dickinsoncountyconservationboard.com.
