Dickinson County Nature Center Offering A Program For Teens In 2026

December 23, 2025

(Okoboji)– The Dickinson County Nature Center will be holding a Wild Roots program in 2026. Community Relations Coordinator Amy Heibult says they are excited to continue this program for teens in the area…

“Wild stands for wilderness inspired Leadership development. It’s a free team program. We’re building character and those leadership skills as well as outdoor recreational skills. And there’s even some volunteer opportunities in several of our other youth programs where kids can kind of start building those experiences and kind of teaching those important life skills down the road.”

Heibult talks about the Wild Roots program that will be held on January 12th…

“They’re going to be heading outside to hike through looking for signs of animals. They’re going to be learning track and scat ID, so they’ll get to look for signs, and then we’ll head back inside and use a key to identify those various signs of animals. And then to wrap it up, they’re going to be mixing up some plaster to make some molds and then imprinting various tracks into those molds. And then they’ll get to take something home with them to.”

Heibult says they are looking forward to having a program to offer teens…

“You know, we don’t really have that teen range for a program. So this offers that age range something really special to get outdoors and connect with peers in their groups and also learn those important conservation principles as well.”

Wild Roots is for teens ages 13 to 18 and pre-registration is required. You can register for this free program by going to dickinsoncountyconservationboard.com under the programs/events tab.
