Dickinson County Food Pantries Continue To Experience High Demand

August 28, 2025

(Spirit Lake)– Food pantries in Dickinson county are continuing to see an increase in demand. Kim Wermersen represents the Board of Supervisors on the Dickinson County Hunger Coalition. He gave an update on July’s numbers at Tuesday’s supervisors meeting, saying the demand is only expected to continue on an upward trend, especially as new restrictions come into place on some assistance programs…

“Concern about cuts on what we’re seeing nationally for, I guess, snap programs and then some of the other programs that are going on Lake Park, uh, pantry serve fifty eight families, one hundred and thirty people. Milford served ninety one families, one hundred and ninety four people. Upper Des Moines continues to be busy, serve serving on ninety five people or ninety five families. Excuse me. Per week. So they’re busy as well. Spirit life, served fifty six families and one hundred and forty seven people. And they are very graciously filling in for Upper Des Moines during the. They have one week off a month during the summer months, and they’ve been filling in and doing a terrific job with that, that, that programs at the school are, are steady. We’re looking at offering additional services at the food pantries when folks come to get their food.”

Wermersen says those could include things such as legal aid and direction on where to go for mental health services.
