Dickinson County Engineer Confident Scrap Iron Sales Are Being Handled Properly

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson County Engineer Dan Eckert told the board of supervisors Tuesday he’s confident county workers are properly handling the sale of scrap iron and that the county is being properly reimbursed for it.

Eckert’s report comes on the heels of an investigation in Lyon county where eight county employees have been charged for allegedly stealing scrap iron that belonged to the county, then selling it and not reimbursing the county for it.

Eckert says since news of the scandal broke in Lyon county, that he’s taken some time to do some checking. He says receipts given to scrap iron dealers match payments that have been made to the county.

Even then, Eckert says he’s sent a memo to employees reminding them of the policy.

Eckert says the county actually does quite a bit in the way of scrap metal business, as aluminum signs that are taken down as they fade are recycled, along with other scrap iron, such as worn out plow blades.
