(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office has released details into a single-vehicle crash back on August 23rd that injured five people.
It happened shortly before midnight that night near the intersection of 280th Avenue and 175th Street on the south side of Lily Lake.
Deputies say 31-year-old Terry Brown of Ruthven was driving a 1998 Ford Expedition eastbound on 175th Street when he lost control after failing to negotiate a curve. The vehicle left the road and rolled.
A search was conducted for the occupants of the vehicle by law enforcement, fire and rescue personnel. One of the injured was eventually found in a field.
Authorities say Brown sustained minor injuries but was able to flee the scene. He was arrested on Monday by Spirit Lake police on charges of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, reckless driving, failure to maintain control and no insurance-accident related.
A passenger in the vehicle Brown was driving, 24-year-old Johnathon Sutherland of Ruthven, sustained incapacitating injuries and was transported by helicopter to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
21-year-old Katie Flannegan of Emmetsburg, another passenger, sustained non-incapacitating injuries and was transported by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake.
Possible injuries were reported to two other passengers: 27-year-old Eric Jordan of Spencer and 19-year-old Tiffany Wiggins of Hartley.
The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Spirit Lake and Arnolds Park Police Departments, Superior and Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire and Rescue Departments; and the Spirit Lake and Terril ambulances.
