Dickinson Co. Supervisors Hear Update From Summit Carbon Solutions Pipeline Officials

January 24, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors today (Tues.) heard an update from officials with Summit Carbon Solutions, one of two companies planning to construct carbon capture pipelines in Dickinson county and the surrounding area. Kaylee Lingrell of Turn Key Logistics, a company in charge of non-environmental permitting for Summit Carbon Solutions, addressed the supervisors…

“As far as construction, we do still expect to start construction in the summer of 2023 so about the August range of this year. Land acquisition, we are at around 53 percent of easement miles acquired in Dickinson county, and in the state we are at about 63 percent of easement miles acquired. As far as easement payments, we have spent around four million in the county thus far on voluntary easement payments. And then as far as permitting we have submitted the road crossing permits. I’m sure you guys are aware of that. Next up on our agenda would be to submit the driveway permits, so we are working on that right now.”

The Iowa Project Manager for Summit Carbon Solutions informed the supervisors current plans call for the line to cross 17 drainage tiles and three ditches in Dickinson county. Lingrell added they are still waiting on hearing dates from the Iowa Utilities Board that need to be held as part of the permitting process. She added construction cannot start until the permits are issued and all of the easements that are needed are obtained. An opponent of the pipeline also addressed the supervisors, calling on them to intervene with the I-U-B…

“Even if it just goes by your place, it’s not on your property, you have no say in what will happen. If something happens you are in that path, also. And it can be up to a mile, two miles, three miles, five miles. You don’t know. But I have neighbors that, they’re getting nothing out of it and their lives are at risk. They’re totally at risk.”

Supervisor Tim Fairchild disclosed today (Tues.) he has signed an easement for the pipeline which would pass through some land he owns…

“The reason that I haven’t been yelling from the rooftops against it is because I really feel like any power to do anything about that lies in Des Moines.”

Officials with Summit Carbon Solutions indicated they will be coming back to the county to further address the drainage tile and road crossing permit applications.
