Dickinson Co. Supervisors Consider Sign Request; Hear Disturbing Budget Info.

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson county board of supervisors today (Tuesday) took no action on a request that county road crews put up a sign along a county road directing people to a church in Terril.

County Engineer Dan Eckert said he received the request for what’s known as a “destination sign” from the church. Eckert added the county currently does not have a policy in place for such signs, and he expressed concern that allowing this particular request could set a precedence.

Following some discussion, the supervisors directed Eckert to contact city officials in Terril regarding the matter, since the church is in city limits.

In other business, supervisors approved the purchase of a new storage system for the county’s computer servers at a cost not to exceed 32-thousand dollars; and they took no action on a funding request from Active Okoboji. The organization is requesting 30-thousand dollars from the county in the upcoming fiscal year.

Prior to hearing that request, supervisor Paul Johnson inquired as to the impact the Governor’s 10 percent across-the-board budget cut will have on Dickinson county. County Auditor Nancy Reiman replied by saying it will be significant, adding she’ll have more details in a couple of weeks or so. Depending on the impact, Reiman said the supervisors may have to consider ordering department heads to make de-appropriations, or cuts, to their current budgets. But she said at this point it’s still too early to tell if that will be needed.

Reiman added there’s probably going to be even worse news when it comes to the county’s budget. She says Local Option Sales Tax receipts are running about 54-thousand dollars BELOW Department of Revenue projections due to decreased retail sales in the county.
