Dickinson Co. Supervisors Authorize Grant Application For Eastern Expansion Of Ta Tonka Ska Trace Trail

April 04, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Supervisors today (Tues.) authorized the county’s Trails Board to proceed with a grant application to expand another segment of the Ta Tonka Ska Trace Trail eastward from Spirit Lake. Erin Reed of Dickinson County Trails told supervisors the funding, if awarded, would be for paving nearly two miles of former railroad right-of-way…

“We’re applying for the Region 3 TAP Grant. It’s a local northwest Iowa application and it’s $400,000 we’re going after. They have more money this year it sounds like. I haven’t gotten the final number for what exactly that is. It’s for phase 5 which is going from Spirit Lake towards Superior. Last year we were awarded $272,000 in Region 3 TAP funds for phase 4A, so we’re just planning out into the future. The funding is not available until fiscal year ’26, and we’d be looking at construction in 2027.”

She says this part of the project would not include an area where some abandoned rail cars are currently situated, just east of the Jackson Y, or Highway 71.
