Dickinson Co. Supervisors Approve Revised Level B Road Map

October 04, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors today (Tues.) approved a revised Level B road map for the county. Level B, or minimum maintenance roads, do not have snow removed from them. The revision approved today (Tues.) adds a little more than 9 miles of roads to that designation. County Engineer Dan Eckert says the roads meet the needed criteria in that no one lives along them and there are no confinement operations near them. He says it will allow plow operators to focus more attention on higher priority routes and will also help from a financial standpoint…

“I always like to remind people we have approximately 700 miles of roads and you only remove snow on one side of the road at a time. You don’t remove snow on both lanes. Obviously you go down one lane and shove it off then you go up the other, so that’s 1,400 lane miles every time it snows that we push snow off. So when you put it into perspective, you know these 9.3 miles aren’t probably the end of the world.”

Most of the affected areas are in the western part of the county, in a district represented by Supervisor Kim Wermersen…

“We’ve investigated with the Post Office, with the schools, with local folks. They know those roads better than we do.”

Eckert says the decision could be made later to re-classify those areas should something change.
