(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors today (Tues.) approved a funding request from the Northwest Iowa Habitat For Humanity. Board member Valerie Watters told the supervisors they have an opportunity to purchase 9 lots for housing projects…
“This is a little different than we’ve done in the past. We normally just bought a lot and done one dwelling but it would be a huge help to us to have lots available so that we can find families and put the houses on as needed. I think we’re all aware that affordable housing is just desperately needed everywhere, so this would help us to expedite the process a little bit. Looking for land and trying to purchase land is very difficult for us and getting the funding for it all is difficult, so this would be a real boost to our program to be able to have land available and then just proceed to find families that qualify. We go by the HUD guidelines and so we do screen families. When we find a suitable family then we’re able to proceed with getting a house built that would meet their needs.”
The $240,000 in funding will come from the county’s Low to Moderate Income Housing Fund.
