(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson county board of supervisors Tuesday awarded bids to extend a trail around a portion of West Lake Okoboji, also known as the “Bay Harbor Trail”, and to build two tunnels under Highway 86 as part of the same project.
The low bid on the grading and paving for the trail was awarded to Diamond Concrete of Spirit Lake in the amount of 462,264-dollars. The engineer’s estimate was 523,276-dollars.
The low bid on the tunnels was awarded to Peterson Contractors of Reinbeck, Iowa in the amount of 331,733-dollars…slightly below the engineer’s estimate of 351,672-dollars.
The mile and-a-half long trail extension will run from the south end of Cutty’s Resort to the entrance at Village West Resort. Tunnels under Highway 86 will be constructed at the north end near Cutty’s and on the south end near Okoboji View Golf Course.
Work is to start in June with completion slated for this coming October.
An engineer on the project reported Highway 86 will have to be closed for up to 10 days for each tunnel as they’re constructed. He said that won’t happen until after Labor Day.
