Dickinson Co. P & Z Meets

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Planning and Zoning Commission Tuesday voted unanimously to recommend the board of supervisors approve the re-zoning of some land adjacent to Moeller Marine on the northwest side of Big Spirit Lake from multi-family residential to Highway Commmercial. Landowners told the commission they’ve been working with a firm that wants to put in a cardtrol gas station on the property.

The commission also Tuesday approved a change in wording in the county’s Zoning Ordinance pertaining to the allowance of convenience stores and service stations in Agricultural districts. Currently they are allowed in those areas as a permitted principal use. The commission Tuesday voted unanimously to instead make them conditional principal uses in Ag Districts, meaning any proposal to build a convenience store or service station in an agriculturally zoned area will need to go before the county’s Board of Adjustment, which could attach certain conditions that would have to be met.

Commissioners also Tuesday decided to proceed in scheduling a public hearing on a proposal to require special markers on guy wires of met towers, which are used to gather data for wind farms. Most of those towers are under 200 feet and do not have to meet Federal Aviation Administration requirements for painting and lighting. Crop dusting pilots say the unmarked towers and their guy wires are a hazard.
