Dickinson Co. P & Z Hears Pleas For Wind Energy Moratorium Recommendation

August 21, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– A meeting of the Dickinson County Planning and Zoning Commission this (Mon.) afternoon to talk about forming a committee to study wind farms in the county got almost as hot as the weather outside. A huge crowd overflowed the Community Room at the courthouse and the meeting had to be delayed 10 minutes to try to accommodate the overflow. Adjoining doors to the meeting room had to be opened so those standing in the hallway could hear the proceedings.

Commission Chairman Tony Weber told the crowd the committee would be similar to one the P & Z fashioned in 2008…

“The purpose of the new committee is really to update to the changes in technology in today’s turbines and to recognize the rights of all citizens in Dickinson county, not only the ones that don’t seem to like the turbines but to also the farmers who happen to have them on their property. So we’ve got a number of people that we’re looking at to be part of the committee.”

It comes on the heels of plans by a wind energy developer, Invenergy, to put up turbines in eastern Dickinson county. The matter is scheduled to go before the county’s Board of Adjustment next week. Resident Barbara Clayton told the commission it’s too late now to be forming a committee, which won’t be holding its first meeting until August 29th. She called on the commission to recommend the Board of Supervisors implement a moratorium on the construction of any new turbines…

“We have a countdown. The meeting is happening next week for Invenergy. Once that meeting happens we have a 30 day window. At that 30 day window, that’s when they can put in an application. When that application hits we are stuck under the current ordinance. So please, you need to ask the supervisors for a moratorium.”

The commission then adjourned the meeting with no further discussion.

The Board of Supervisors is scheduled to hear comments from the public at their meeting Tuesday. The start time of that meeting has been bumped up to 8:30 am at the Community Room of the Courthouse, with another very large crowd expected.
