Dickinson Co. Jury Acquits Steven Titterington On Both Counts

February 28, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– A Dickinson county jury has acquitted Steven Titterington on both counts of sexual abuse in the 3rd degree and sexual exploitation by a school employee.

During closing arguments this (Tues.) morning, prosecuting attorney Andrew Prosser told jurors there had to be a valid reason for the alleged victim to have pursued the case, knowing that she would be put through what he described as a “public crucifixion”…

“Knowing that that was going to happen to her, public crucifixion of her and her character and her demeanor, she still got in that stand.”

Prosser also addressed the alleged victim’s inconsistent statements…

“Would anybody who had their statement written and recorded about anything eight times over a year be expected to come in and nail it every single time?”

During his closing arguments, defense attorney Chris Sandy told jurors there was another reason as to why the alleged victim’s statements changed…

“The problem was she knew that no one could witness something that didn’t happen. No one would confirm her lie, and so her story changed.”

Sandy also asked jurors this question…

“Can you imagine being falsely accused of a crime like this? Can you imagine what that would do to someone and their family, how miserable that would be?”

The jury reached its verdict of not guilty on both counts following about 40 minutes of deliberating this (Tues.) morning.
