Deer Hunting Mishap Results In Minor Injury To Dickens Man

November 22, 2014

(Ruthven)– A Dickens man sustained a minor injury in a weekend hunting accident in Palo Alto county.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says 22-year-old Adam Storey was struck by a shotgun slug yesterday (Sun.) while hunting deer.

Authorities say Storey was hunting with one group of hunters when a shot taken at a running deer by a hunter in another group went over a ridge and struck Storey in the upper hip. The slug didn’t penetrate the skin. Storey was taken to Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg where he was treated and released after sustaining a bad bruise.

Officials say the two separate groups of four to five hunters each were hunting adjoining public land areas north of Ruthven around 9:30 a.m. They say Storey couldn’t be seen at the time the shot was taken because of a ridge. DNR Recreational Safety Officer Marty Eby says the shot traveled more than 300 yards before striking Storey.

The DNR was assisted on the scene by the Iowa State Patrol, Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office and the Palo Alto County Conservation Board.
