Crews Able To Get More Work Done Than First Thought This Fall On North Y Development

December 21, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– Mild weather in November and so far in December has allowed crews to accomplish some additional work on a major new commercial development on the north edge of Spencer.

City Engineer Jim Thiese updated the City Council earlier this week on the North Y project. He says crews were able to complete installation of a sewer main. In addition, Thiese says all but 500 feet of water main has been put into place and that they were able to get some grading work done…things that weren’t expected to happen until next spring. He says some work remains to be done in the Highway 71 right-of-way and that they continue to draw up plans for turning lanes off the highway…

“We’re hoping to have final plans done right around the first of the year and then submit those to the D.O.T for their review and go through that process, but then we’ll have a local letting for that. If you’ll recall the D.O.T has said, according to the traffic study we have to have both a northbound right turn lane into 42nd Street and a southbound left turn lane into 42nd Street. And 42nd Street is the new street that would go where the old Wonder Bread building is.”

Thiese says the site work has now ended for the season, with the rest of it to be done in the spring.
