Crash Sends Spirit Lake Teen To Hospital, Then Jail

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– A single-vehicle crash Thursday evening on Highway 71 at 202nd Street, or the “Taco House Road” sent a Spirit Lake teen to the hospital…then to jail.

Milford police say 18-year-old Tailer Handsaker of Spirit Lake was northbound on Highway 71 when he lost control of a 2004 Chevrolet Impala. The vehicle left the road and went into the southeast ditch. It then rolled through the intersection with 202nd Street, coming to rest in the ditch on the northeast side of the intersection.

Handsaker was taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake where he was treated and released.

Handsaker was then booked into the Dickinson county jail on charges of speeding…80 miles-per-hour in a 35 mile-per-hour zone and 94 miles-per-hour in a 45 mile-per-hour zone; reckless driving; failure to maintain control and operating while intoxicated.

Milford police were assisted on the scene by the Arnolds Park and Okoboji Police Departments, the Iowa State Patrol, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office, Lakes Regional Healthcare ambulance and paramedics, and Milford Fire and Rescue.

The crash took place around 8:20 p.m.
