(Spencer)– A single-vehicle crash Sunday evening in Clay county resulted in minor injuries and sent one person to jail on a drunk driving charge.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 19-year-old Riley Morton of Ruthven was driving a 2000 Ford Taurus southbound on a county road. Authorities say the vehicle left the road and went into the ditch and hit a field approach. It then became airborne. Upon landing, the vehicle went through a fence, coming to rest in a corn field.
Morton was taken to Spencer Hospital and was treated for minor injuries and released. Morton was then placed under arrest for operating while intoxicated…first offense; failure to maintain control and no insurance. Morton was transported to the Clay county jail.
Upon further investigation deputies learned a 17-year-old male who was a passenger in the vehicle fled the scene and was later found at a residence in Ruthven. The juvenile was cited into juvenile court for interference with official acts, public intoxication, underage alcohol possession and failure to wear a seatbelt…all simple misdemeanors.
$7,000 in damage was estimated to the vehicle driven by Morton.
The crash took place shortly before 7:00 p.m.
