County To Pay For Driveway Extensions In East Okoboji Beach Area

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Some relief is on the way for some residents in the East Okoboji Beach area that had their driveways displaced from a main street in the area as the result of a road project by the county.

The Dickinson county board of supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday for the county to cover the cost of four homeowners to extend the pavement of their driveways to meet up with the right-of-way of Shoreline Drive, which was relocated as a result of the project.

Supervisor Mardi Allen made the motion, saying the county should cover the cost since it instigated the project.

The motion followed a comment by Assistant County Attorney Lonnie Saunders who recommended the county either pay for all four driveways involved, or none at all.

The cost of all four is estimated at $18,535. Allen, who’s been closely tracking the project and its finances, says there should be enough money in the project’s coffers to cover the additional expense. The project is being funded through tax increment finance bonds.

In other business, supervisors voted four-to-one granting a request from the Veteran’s Foundation to install 30 more flagpoles in the courthouse lawn at the foundation’s expense. Pam Jordan cast the lone dissenting vote.

The supervisors approved a recommendation from County Engineer Dan Eckert to lower the speed limit on 240th Avenue, or “high crossing road”, near its intersection with 255th Avenue. The new limit will be 35 miles-per-hour.
