County Officials Sound Off On New Requirement For Budget Hearing Notices To Be Mailed

April 01, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– County officials are sounding off on a new requirement through House File 718 that requires them to mail notices about budget hearings to property owners. Dickinson County Auditor Lori Pedersen says they didn’t get the needed information from the state for those notices until just days before the mandated deadline to get them mailed…

“We were, the counties were actually able to finally download the final file at like about 5:30 on the 15th and they had to by Code, be mailed out by the 20th of March.”

Pedersen says to her knowledge, hardly anyone received the notice prior to this (Mon.) morning’s levy hearing…

“That’s very disturbing just because I don’t feel like we’re doing our job even though we did. And now it’s $13,000 and it’s after the fact.”

The $13,000 Pedersen eluded to is what it cost the county to send out the required notices.
