Construction & Fundraising Underway For New Clay County Extension Building

September 07, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– A fundraising campaign has been launched for the construction of a new Extension Office in Clay county. Dirk Benson of the Clay County Extension Council tells KUOO news the campaign has been dubbed “Grow Clay County”…

“We kind of started this project with the thought of we need to, we want to take our rent payments that are currently out of the county and turn that into a mortgage payment and so we purchased the land and we are ongoing in raising funds to help us support this along with the rent payments and the mortgage payments that we’ll have, so we’re reaching out to the county and the whole community, not even just Clay county, to help us build a better building for the future of youth and the future of 4-H.”

The new facility will be located at 1515 West 18th Street in Spencer, near the Clay County Fairgrounds. Benson says construction is already well underway…

“We worked through CMBA Architects in Spencer and they did a really good job designing us a building and getting us a design that’s really going to flow and be good and we accepted a bid from Jake Schoelerman of Schoelerman Contracting and he’s been out there working. The building is up, the roof was on the last time I checked and they’re really getting things done out there.”

Benson says they hope to move in to the new facility in late November or early December.

Those interested in donating to Grow Clay County can do so online through the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Clay County website or by stopping by the Clay County Extension Office or by calling 712-262-2264. Benson says they’ll also have information available at the 4-H office at the Clay County Fairgrounds during the fair as well as at the static exhibit building.

The fundraising effort recently received a $25,000 contribution from Community State Bank.
