(Spencer)– Construction continues on a major upgrade of the Emergency Department at Spencer Hospital. Susan Zulk, VP of Marketing and Fund Development, says work on earlier phase of the project is starting to wrap up…
“Officially the project began last October and we started doing a lot of work on the east side of our campus. We removed the old ambulance garage and we’ve been doing just a lot of infrastructure work, so we are getting close to finishing up on the east side of the area. There’s a new ambulance garage, there’s been a lot of concrete poured, a new loading dock going in, and there’s actually a tunnel that runs under 2nd Avenue East from the hospital to that loading dock area and the maintenance building, so that’s all been reinforced. We’re getting ready to move over to that south side soon.”
Zulk says work there will begin following the July 4th holiday…
“There’s a new parking area that’s been completed. The access is more for physicians and for employee clinic staff since it’s located on that southwest corner of the campus. And then on 2nd Avenue East which is the one block between East 10th and East 11th, so that’s just immediately east of the clinic building, there will be some utilities re-routed. So starting early July that street will have some really access to residents there and the parking along that side of the street will be off limits for until the duration of that project which anywhere from four to six to eight weeks to get that done. Then later this summer we’ll begin work where the Emergency Department is going. We’ll be taking out and putting in because they’ll be digging for a basement but also bringing in a lot of dirt because we have to raise the elevation of that street level area to bring it up more to the hospital level.”
Zulk says the project is still on target for completion in late 2024, but she says that’s dependent upon a number of factors and could be subject to change.
