Construction Continues On Hwys. 4 & 9 In Estherville

August 08, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Estherville)– Construction continues on both Highways 4 and 9 in Estherville. City Administrator Penny Clayton says paving on Highway 4 from the railroad underpass south is scheduled to begin this coming Monday, August 14th, weather permitting…

“They will pave both travel lanes, so the main line, they’ll pave those together, and so they’ll work from the underpass and then they’ll head south. That paving, theoretically, would go relatively quick but then there’s a lot of work that goes in after they do the main line paving with all of the hand tie-ins that need to be done; they have to connect 1st Street, they need to do some bridge work, they’re going to pave some of the shoulders, they have to wait for that to cure before they can go back in and work on the shoulder, so it’s a process and it will take some time but it’s moving along.”

Work also continues on Highway 9 at half mile hill. Clayton says some additional pavement removal will be going on in that area beginning today (Tues.)…

“They’re going to take out the West 9th Street intersection, so the Car Central intersection, they’re going to take that out down past 170th Street and so they’ll be starting to work from that section. People have been going in the work zone even though they’re not supposed to and using that. They’re really not going to be able to. The other thing is that they currently have their haul road coming down the hill which means they should have just one way traffic. Those trucks and anybody living in that work zone should all head east coming down the hill. When they want to return they need to go back up the west side and then come back down going east.”

Clayton adds that beginning Monday, August 14th, North 9th Street from Central Avenue to the intersection at 5th Avenue North will also be closed to traffic for paving.
