Collision Tuesday At Jackson Y Sends Multiple People To Hospitals

June 13, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Superior)– A two-vehicle collision late Tuesday afternoon near the east junction of Highways 9 & 71, or the Jackson Y, sent multiple people to the hospital.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says 69-year-old Timothy Wikert of Collins, Iowa, was driving a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado pulling a trailer westbound on Highway 9 and crossed the centerline. Deputies say Wikert’s vehicle narrowly missed a head-on collision, side swiping an eastbound 2022 Ford Escape driven by 25-year-old Jackson Fisher of Spirit Lake. Both vehicles spun out of control with the one driven by Wikert coming to rest on its side.

Five people were injured; one was treated on the scene; two were transported to Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville with non-incapacitating injuries and two were taken to Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake with incapacitating injuries.

Damage to the vehicle driven by Wikert was estimated at $12,000; Jackson’s vehicle sustained an estimated $20,000 in damage.

Wikert was cited for failure to maintain control.

Authorities say the collision remains under investigation.
