(Spencer)—A two-vehicle collision yesterday on Highway 71 in Clay county injured two people.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 50-year-old William Greig of Estherville was northbound and had slowed to make a left turn to Spencer Livestock Sales. Authorities say a second vehicle, driven by 87-year-old John Murphy of LeMars, was also northbound and failed to see the vehicle driven by Greig slowing. Murphy attempted to stop, but was unable to avoid colliding with the rear of the vehicle driven by Greig.
Murphy sustained incapacitating injuries and was taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital. A passenger in Murphy’s vehicle escaped injury. Minor injuries were reported to Greig, who didn’t seek immediate treatment.
$8,000 in damage was estimated to a 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by Murphy; a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse driven by Greig sustained an estimated $5,000 in damage.
The collision took place around 12:15 p.m.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Spencer Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Spencer Hospital, Spencer Fire and Fostoria Fire and Rescue.
