(Storm Lake)– A head-on crash in dense fog early Sunday on Highway 71 in Buena Vista county claimed a life.
The Iowa State Patrol says it involved a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse driven by 27-year-old Derren Mauricio of Alta and a 2019 Jeep Wrangler driven by 21-year-old Estevan Rodriguez of Alta. Mauricio died in the crash. Rodriguez and another person, identified as 30-year-old Lucero Martinez-Juarez of Early, were both taken by ambulance to Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Troopers say the vehicle driven by Mauricio was southbound and crossed into the opposite lane where it collided with the northbound vehicle driven by Rodriguez. The collision took place shortly after 5:00 am Sunday. Authorities say it remains under investigation.
