Collision At Intersection Of Two Clay Co. Roads Injures Passerby; Sends One Person To Jail

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Clay county roads M50 and B24 Saturday afternoon injured a good samaritan who stopped to give assistance and landed one of the drivers in jail on several charges.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says 91-year-old Lois Michelson of Spencer was driving a 2001 Buick Century on county road M50 and was attempting to turn left onto county road B24 when she collided with the side of a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 23-year-old Jesse Clark of Spencer. That vehicle then went into the ditch.

Authorities say a passerby, identified as Joseph Beck of Wasille, Alaska, then stopped to provide assistance.

Upon learning that law enforcement had been contacted, witnesses said Clark and a passenger in the vehicle he had been driving, Kelsey Wolthuis of Spencer, got back into the vehicle and attempted to flee. Authorities say Beck was trying to get Clark to stop when he was drug across the intersection before falling off the car. Clark then stopped on the north side of the intersection.

Beck was taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital with a minor head injury.

Clark was arrested on charges of driving while revoked and reckless driving. He was being held in the Clay county jail on a one thousand dollar bond.

Michelson was cited for an improper left turn.

Damage to the vehicle Michelson was driving was estimated at one thousand dollars; two thousand dollars in damage was estimated to the one Clark was driving.

Authorities say the incident took place shortly after 4:30 p.m.
