(Spencer –)
An ambitious project aims to break a Guinness World Record at the 2013 Clay County Fair in Spencer, while raising awareness about the Governor’s STEM initiative, which encourages youth to pursue technical careers.
Kari Webb, Regional Manager with the initiative’s hub at Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville explains, that the event will require public participation.
“Through a collaborative effort between the Clay County Fair, Iowa Lakes Community collage and the STEM initiative, we’re going to try to set a world record on September 14th. We’re looking to bring in thousands of people to the Grandstand and we’re going to do a hand’s on, very-interactive, fun science lesson. We’re going to follow the Guiness World record instructions to a ‘T’. But, we’re not going to just try, we’re going to achieve the world record for the largest practical science instruction ever held.”
Webb notes that the event is open to all ages. “We’re preparing lab packs. Every single person has to participate in the experiment, so it’s going to be a really fantastic activity for people young and old alike”
Details on the STEM initiative may be found online at iowastem.gov as well as on the Iowa Lakes Community College Website.
