Close Call For Milford’s Only Grocery Store

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– A close call for Milford’s only grocery store.

The Milford Fire Department was called to Buy Rite around 12:30 a.m. this (Tuesday) morning after getting a report of a fire alarm going off in the building.

Law enforcement confirmed smoke in the building.

The owner arrived and entry was gained while firefighters were enroute. It was determined an oven had been left on. Fire Chief Jim Carpenter says the store’s extinguishment system activated and contained the fire. Two handheld fire extinguishers were used to put it out entirely and the gas was shut off.

Firefighters ventilated the building and inspected the ceiling of the kitchen for any extension beyond the ventilation system.

The Milford Fire Department was on the scene about an hour and-a-half.

The Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire Department was initially paged for assistance, but was canceled when it was determined their help wouldn’t be needed.

No injuries were reported.

The Milford Police Department assisted on the scene.
