(Spencer)– Clay county will be getting a new jail.
65 percent of those who voted in Tuesday’s election were in favor of the 5.6 million dollar bond issue…surpassing the 60 percent needed for passage under Iowa law. 34 percent were opposed.
Yes votes totaled 1,090 while 578 voted no.
Slightly more than 13 percent of the county’s eligible voters turned out in Tuesday’s election.
Plans call for the county to construct a new jail adjacent to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office on the southwest side of Spencer. The new facility will replace an existing one in downtown Spencer that authorities say is badly outdated and no longer meets state standards.
