The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is warning area residents to be aware of a possible scam involving an anonymous Secret Shopper Acceptance Letter and checks made payable to individuals. Authorities say that so far, checks have been made out for over the amount of $1,900.00 with a pretext that recipients should contact an account manager to activate the enclosed check before depositing into their bank account. The checks are believed to be bogus.
Officials suggest that anyone receiving one of these Secret Shopper letters or checks should check with local law enforcement agency or their personal bank before attempting to cash them.
Also it is advised to not give out financial or personal information to customer surveys of this nature.
