(Spencer)– Authorities in Clay county are unveiling a new electronic tool at their disposal for fighting crime.
The Spencer Police Department and Clay County Sheriff’s Office are now utilizing a new program called “TipSoft”. Authorities say the system allows citizens to send anonymous tips by sending a text message from a cell phone or online.
Officials say the “TipSoft” program also allows them to respond by text message to the originating cell phone without ever knowing the identity of the individual who left the tip. The user’s information is always given an alias and a unique ID number before being sent. Officials say it allows the tipster and the investigator to have a two-way dialogue while always keeping the uers’s identity anonymous.
To report a tip by texting you must text to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter CSI21.
While they’re excited about the new tool, authorities still remind everyone it is not a substitute for 911.
Clay County Crimestoppers can also still be reached at 262-6655.
More information can be found online at the Clay County Sheriff’s Office website or the Spencer Police Department’s website.
Authorities say the TipSoft program is being used by several other law enforcement agenies in the state as well.
