(Spirit Lake)– A new agreement is in place between the city of Spirit Lake and the Spirit Lake Community School District for a School Resource Officer. Police Chief Shane Brevik tells KUOO news this is the first time the agreement has been updated since it was first put into place years ago…
“It hasn’t been updated since we first opened the position in 2008 so we just kind of re-did the contract just to clean some things up that didn’t pertain to 2024, so.”
Brevik says officer Ryan Vos, who has served in the position the past several years, will continue in that capacity…
“He spends his entire work week in the school. He has an office in the high school and he tries to make a round through the schools each day and then he assists the school in anything that’s law enforcement-related and then he’s also in there just to build relationships and try to make that connection between the student body and the police department and the school. It’s really been beneficial to I think everybody involved, so.”
City Attorney/Administrator Gregg Owens says the cost of the officer is split between the city and school district…
“Per the agreement the school pays 45 percent of the annual city cost of the officer, so it’s really just that simple. And every six months they’ll get an invoice for what that share is and they’ll pay it. That’s pretty much how it’s worked for the last 15, 16 years, and it’s worked great.”
The Spirit Lake City Council approved the updated agreement during a special meeting over the noon hour today (Fri.). The school board signed off on it at their meeting Monday evening.
