City Officials In Spencer Weighing Options For Wastewater Treatment Facility

December 06, 2024 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– City officials in Spencer are getting a better handle on damages to the city’s wastewater treatment plant from this past summer’s flood. Interim City Manager Kevin Robinson told the city council earlier this week a study completed by an engineering firm puts the damages at roughly four to five million dollars…

“We’ll be meeting with public works just discussing the pros and cons of moving forward either replacing the stuff that was damaged in our normal project timeline and/or working with Veolia and McClure about what we’re replacing, is there a better path forward? The technology that we use is old. I believe that there’s some proactive options moving forward that we could use some of the FEMA disaster money for to improve our wastewater treatment plant. You’ll see more information on that in the next 45 days.”

The city of Spencer contracts with Veolia to operate it’s wastewater treatment plant. Robinson says the company operates numerous wastewater facilities nationwide, including one in New Orleans, and has experience in dealing with damages to those facilities caused by natural disasters. He says their input will be beneficial as the city of Spencer considers its options for the facility.
