(Sheldon)– The Sheldon Chamber and Development Corporation, or SCDC, and city of Sheldon have announced they’ve signed purchase agreements to acquire about 47 acres of farmland on the city’s southwest side. Terms call for the city of Sheldon to own about 30 acres of the land, with the remainder being owned by the SCDC, which will also develop the land.
Sheldon City Attorney Micah Schreurs says the city of Sheldon will pay $900,000 for it’s share of the land. He says other details are still being finalized…
“As with any purchase involving farm ground or bare ground, they’re not all 100 percent developable, so that stuff is getting ironed out. So that’s to be determined. I mean there hasn’t been any platting or anything like that yet.”
Schreurs says the land will be used for housing…
“For years and years and years, the number one priority of SCDC and serving its constituents is that we need just more good housing in Sheldon and that can come in various forms. Again it’s too early to say this is what it’s going to be or this what it’s not going to be, but it’s earmarked for residential development. This is not industrial-commercial. The intent as far as I know is that this is earmarked for residential development. And, you know, if you look at the neighborhood, that makes sense.”
City officials say each acre will likely hold four to five lots, which would translate into more than 150 new lots if they are all developed.
