(Orleans)– The city of Orleans is looking at perhaps switching to a curbside collection system for recycling. City residents currently drop off their recyclable materials at some roll-offs east of city hall. Dickinson county provides a subsidy to the city for hosting the drop-off, which is also used by residents in the unincorporated areas of the county. But Mayor Bill Maas says that’s become problematic…
“It’s getting to the point though to where it is becoming more of a problem than a benefit and so therefore we’re talking about going to curbside recycling because everybody else that’s on the Recycling Commission has already gone to curbside recycling. That isn’t to say that we will completely get rid of all of our bins and stuff, because I’ve also talked to the county and we’re concerned as a county committee, also. Actually we do not want to shut off people in the county from having places to recycle and stuff. It’s become a problem in itself.”
The Orleans City Council Monday evening voted to proceed in getting quotes from companies that provide curbside recycling pickup services…
“Hopefully within the next 30 to 60 days have some figures and facts as to what it would cost the city of Orleans. We’re kind of unique in Orleans because of the fact that we don’t charge for recycling, we do not charge for garbage pick up. It’s all part of the taxes and stuff which I think the citizens have kind of enjoyed that and we don’t want to get away from that because they don’t have to write an extra check out or worry did I pay this or did I pay that? It’s part of the taxes and it’s actually easier for us to do it that way, also.”
The council also voted Monday evening to notify the company that services the roll-offs that the city plans to terminate that contract effective this coming July 1st.
