Cherokee Supervisor Bellefy Enters Iowa Senate District 3 Race

January 09, 2026

A new challenger has stepped forward in the race for Iowa Senate District 3.

Cherokee County Supervisor Shane Bellefy announced his campaign yesterday, promising what he calls a “common‑sense approach” to leadership and a stronger voice for northwest Iowa.

Bellefy, a Cherokee native and banking executive, says his decision to run grew out of his service as county supervisor and his belief that rural leaders who face everyday challenges are best positioned to shape state policy.

He and his wife returned to Cherokee nearly eight years ago to raise their four children, and he says that commitment to rural values drives his campaign.

Bellefy’s platform centers on rural priorities: stabilizing schools and keeping young talent in local communities, delivering property tax relief, defending agriculture from regulations and foreign threats, and expanding biofuels and markets for farmers. He also pledges support for law enforcement, combating drugs like fentanyl, improving rural healthcare through telehealth and provider incentives, and investing in infrastructure and broadband access.

The seat in Senate District 3—covering Buena Vista, Osceola, and O’Brien counties, along with parts of Cherokee and Clay—is currently held by Senator Lynn Evans of Aurelia, who is seeking re‑election.
