Changes In Motor Vehicle Fees To Go In Effect Jan. 1st

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Changes in motor vehicle fees in Iowa go into effect with the start of the new year.

Dickinson County Treasurer Kris Rowley says it’s a result of TIME 21 (Transportation Investment Moves the Economy in the 21st Century) passed last session by the Iowa Legislature.

Registration fees for motor vehicles owned in Iowa as of December 31st, 2008 will be grandfathered in at the current rates. However, all renewal registrations will be subject to new timetables governing when renewal fees drop according to the model age of the vehicle. In the past, the fees were reduced after five years. Now that won’t happen until after seven years.

Truck owners changing usage or tonnage will also be subject to increased fees.

Regular title fees will increase from $15 to $25; salvage fees will go up from $7 to $15; replacement titles will increase from $15 to $25; and trailers will increase from 20 cents per square foot to 30 cents per square foot.

And beginning with the 2010 model year, pickup truck registrations will also be increasing. They’ll be subject to the same registration rates as automobiles and multi-purpose vehicles.

Rowley says those who use pickups for business will be able to qualify for a business use truck license, which is a flat fee. However, she says you must be able to show that as a depreciation on IRS schedules.
