Changes Could Be In The Works For Veteran’s Plaza At The Dickinson County Courthouse

May 02, 2023 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Some changes could be coming for the veteran’s plaza at the East entrance of the Dickinson County Courthouse. Supervisor Jeff Thee says he and Supervisors Chairman Bill Leupold met recently with a veteran’s group. Thee says they’re mulling over some ideas, including the possible addition of another flag pole…

“Right now we’ve got a U.S. flag sharing with the P.O.W flag. They’d like to add possibly a flag pole and have one for P.O.W. They want to add the Space Force to our flags out there, so they’re getting quotes on that.”

Thee says there’s also some concern over the “tower”…

“It’s the question of is it leaning? Is it not leaning? Is it structurally fine underneath or does it need some help? So our idea was Cole is going to help us find possibly a structural engineer, find out what it would cost, and find out is that tower solid or not? That’s kind of the first step. And we talked about currently with the pavers we have out there for veterans and so forth, the group unanimously feels that veteran’s names shouldn’t be on the ground we walk on, that possibly we have some different memorials added possibly for each war, those years of service and so forth. So the tower is kind of the first step and then find out what we have to do moving on, so a structural engineer would be kind of the first step on that.”

The tower was intended to replicate the old courthouse.
